MUNNAR OVERVIEW
Munnar
is one of the major centres for the tea trade in the
state of Kerala and is situated at an altitude of 1520m
(or around 5500ft) above sea level in the eastern part
of the state amongst the Kannan Devan Hills of the Western
Gnats.
Snuggled
in these high ranges at the confluence of three mountain
streams - Mudrapuzha, Nallathani and Kundala it’s
a wonderfully cool, picturesque spot that proves highly
popular with many visitors to the country seeking an
escape from the heat of lower lying areas.
Cloud
kissed hills carpeted with tea plantations, rivulets
meandering through green meadows and the colonial British
settlements of the town make this place an ideal getaway
that has been referred to by such publications as Time
Magazine as one of the best destinations in India.
Munnar
owes its existence to the numerous British planters
who cleared large stretches of forests to cultivate
tea on the manicured slopes. Tea still reigns supreme
here and Munnar holds the honour of growing tea at one
of the highest levels in the world.
Only
130km from the bustling port town of Kochi (Cochin)
and 142km from Kottayam, the city is known as the spice
garden in the land of the 'Kera' (Coconut) and is the
most nature rich in the whole state.
The
seemingly never-ending, greenery reminds one of the
legend "God created Kerala as his own land and he sent
3000 courtesans to paint the country with only one colour
- Green." You too will encounter the green symphony
- soothing, calming and nourishing when you choose this
as your Indian holiday destination.
Famous
for its tea estates, lakes, reservoirs and forests it
offers true respite where adventure seekers can enjoy
paragliding over the lofty heights, gallop on horse
back through trickling streams, trek over hills to another
glorious horizon or simply lap up the fresh air and
pristine landscape at leisure. No matter what your reason
for visiting, this is one place you will never forget.
Climate
The
best time to visit Munnar is between October and May,
when the rains are not a continual deluge. Don’t
visit during the monsoon months that fall between June
and September as you are guaranteed of getting wet…thoroughly
wet.
It is recommended
to take along a good number of woollens if visiting
Munnar especially during the winter season. In the summers,
a light sweater would be enough to keep away the evening
chill however. |
